How many practice questions should you do?
- FRQs: 6–10 full prompts, each graded against the official rubric.
- MCQs: 200+, ideally with stimulus (data tables, particle diagrams, titration curves).
- Full practice exams: 1–2 timed, end-to-end, in the last month.
The 5-step FRQ practice method
- Time yourself. 22 minutes for a Long FRQ, 8–10 for a Short. Don't pause.
- Use the official rubric. Grade by "did I earn each specific point?"
- Write setup before math. Balanced equation, ICE table, or unit-carrying setup — every time.
- Identify the missed point, not the whole gap. Repair one criterion at a time.
- Re-attempt only the missing criterion. Don't re-do the whole FRQ.
MCQ practice strategy
Why stimulus-based MCQs matter most
AP Chemistry MCQs lean heavily on interpreting particle diagrams, titration curves, reaction-energy diagrams, and data tables. If your practice is mostly vocabulary recall, you're training for the wrong test.
FAQ
Where can I find free AP Chemistry practice questions?
The College Board publishes every released FRQ from 2013 onward at apcentral.collegeboard.org with official scoring guidelines. Sample MCQs live in the back of the CED. AP Classroom (via your teacher) has topic questions and full practice exams.
How many practice questions should I do?
A reasonable target is 6–10 full FRQs (mix of long and short) and 200+ MCQs. A graded FRQ is worth roughly 3× an ungraded one — the diagnostic value comes from comparing your work to the rubric.
Are review-book questions as good as College Board ones?
No. Review books are useful for volume, but the wording, difficulty, and rubric alignment tend to drift from the real exam. Prioritize released FRQs and reserve review-book MCQs for extra reps.
How long should an AP Chemistry FRQ take?
Match exam timing: about 22 minutes for a Long FRQ and 8–10 minutes for a Short FRQ. If you can't finish in time, the fix is usually planning (write the setup faster), not writing speed.
