Where to find real practice questions
| Source | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| College Board AP Central | Released free-response questions with scoring guidelines | Free |
| AP Precalculus Course and Exam Description | Sample multiple-choice and free-response questions | Free |
| AP Classroom (through your teacher) | Topic questions, progress checks and practice exams | Free with class enrollment |
| Review books | Extra multiple-choice volume; alignment to the exam varies | Varies |
The four FRQ types
| Question | Type | Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Function concepts | Required |
| 2 | Modeling a non-periodic context | Required |
| 3 | Modeling a periodic context | Not allowed |
| 4 | Symbolic manipulations | Not allowed |
Each question type tests a different skill, so practise them separately. Modeling questions reward you for naming the function type and explaining your answer in the context of the problem. Symbolic manipulation rewards clean, shown algebra.
How many to do
- FRQs: at least two graded attempts at each of the four types.
- Multiple choice: steady sets from Units 1, 2 and 3. Unit 4 is not on the exam.
- Full practice exam: one timed run in the last few weeks.
How to practise an FRQ
- Time yourself. About 15 minutes per FRQ, matching the exam.
- Grade with the official scoring guideline. Check each point on its own.
- Find the missed point. Name exactly which step or statement cost it.
- Redo only that part. Repair the missed point, not the whole question.
FAQ
Where can I find free AP Precalculus practice questions?
Start with AP Central, where the College Board posts released free-response questions with scoring guidelines. The Course and Exam Description has sample multiple-choice and free-response questions, and AP Classroom (through your teacher) has topic questions and progress checks.
What types of FRQs are on AP Precalculus?
Four, one of each: function concepts, modeling a non-periodic context, modeling a periodic context, and symbolic manipulations. Practise all four so none of them surprises you.
How many practice questions should I do?
Aim for at least two graded attempts at each of the four FRQ types and steady multiple-choice practice from Units 1 to 3. One graded FRQ teaches you more than several ungraded ones.
Do I need a calculator for practice?
Yes, for part of it. Part B of multiple choice and Part A of the free response require a graphing calculator, so practise those sections with the calculator you will use on exam day.
