AP Statistics FRQ Tips 2027: The Four-Step Template That Scores
The redesigned FRQ section is 4 questions, 10 points each, equally weighted. Every question is anchored to two or three of the four Science Practices, and the rubrics reward template fluency more than raw math. Get the template right and most of the points are yours.
The new FRQ section (2027)
| Question | Practices assessed | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| FRQ 1 | Practice 1 (Select Methods) + Practice 2 (Data Analysis) | Describe / compare distributions, identify a study design, choose a procedure |
| FRQ 2 | Practice 3 (Probability & Simulation) + Practice 4 (Argumentation) | Compute probabilities, simulate sampling distributions, argue from evidence |
| FRQ 3 (Inference) | Practices 2, 3, 4 | One full inference procedure (interval or test) with conclusion in context |
| FRQ 4 (Multi) | Practices 2, 3, 4 | Combines multiple content areas — often data description + probability + inference |
Task words and what they mean
| Task word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Describe | Address shape, center, spread, and unusual features — all four |
| Compare | Contrast both distributions on the same features, not one at a time |
| Interpret | Give the meaning of the number in the context of the problem |
| Justify | Cite the specific value, condition, or comparison that supports the claim |
| Explain | Give the reason, not just the outcome |
| Determine | Reach a conclusion supported by a calculation or condition |
The four-step template
- State: define the parameter in context, state H₀ and Hₐ (or the parameter you're estimating), and state α if given.
- Plan: name the procedure explicitly ("2-sample t-test for a difference in means") and check its conditions — Random, Independence/10%, Normal or Large Counts — in context.
- Do: report the test statistic (and df, if applicable) and the p-value or the interval, citing the calculator procedure used.
- Conclude: compare p to α, state your decision about H₀, and answer the actual question in the context of the problem.
What strong FRQ answers do
- Define μ or p in the actual words of the problem (e.g., "the mean commute time in minutes for all workers in the city").
- Name the procedure before running it.
- Check each condition specifically — "n = 50 ≥ 30, so by the CLT the sampling distribution of x̄ is approximately Normal" — not just "conditions are met."
- Write the conclusion with the units and population from the original problem.
- On simulation questions, describe the resampling procedure clearly and count what fraction of simulations meet the criterion.
What weak FRQ answers do
- Skip hypotheses and jump straight into calculator output.
- Write "conditions are met" without checking any.
- Say "reject H₀" but never tie it back to the original claim.
- Confuse "there is a difference in means" with "the difference is large."
- Interpret r or r² without "of the variation in y" or without units.
How to study FRQs
- Pick 3 released FRQs covering different procedures — a 2-proportion test, a matched-pairs t, and a chi-square for independence.
- Write each answer using the four-step template — even parts that seem short.
- Grade against the official rubric, criterion by criterion.
- Rewrite only the sentences that missed points.
- Repeat once a week until the template is muscle memory.
FAQ
What is the four-step FRQ template?
State-Plan-Do-Conclude. State the parameter, hypotheses, and significance level. Plan the procedure and check its conditions in context. Do the calculation, citing the test statistic, df where applicable, and p-value (or the interval). Conclude by comparing p to α and answering the original question in context.
How are the 2027 AP Statistics FRQs structured?
There are 4 FRQs, each worth 10 points and contributing 12.5% of the total score. FRQ 1 covers Practices 1 & 2, FRQ 2 covers Practices 3 & 4, FRQ 3 is inference-focused (Practices 2, 3, 4), and FRQ 4 is multi-focus (Practices 2, 3, 4). The Investigative Task has been retired.
What loses the most FRQ points?
Two things: skipping the context in the conclusion and writing 'conditions are met' without checking them. Both are trivial to fix once you know the template.
Do I need to memorize inference formulas?
No. Bluebook provides the formula sheet and probability tables during the digital exam. Your job is to identify the correct procedure, check its conditions, and interpret the output.
