AP Statistics Scoring 2027: How Points Become a 1–5

The 2026–27 redesign changed both the format and the scoring math. Here's exactly how the new exam is scored, where the points live, and what raw scores tend to map to which composite score.

Section weighting

SectionPointsTimeWeight
Section I: Multiple Choice (42 questions)4290 min50%
Section II: Free Response (4 questions × 10 pts)4090 min50%
Total exam—3 hours100%

Each FRQ contributes 12.5% of the final score. That's a meaningful shift from the old exam, where the Investigative Task alone counted for about twice as much as any other FRQ.

FRQ rubrics

Each of the 4 FRQs is worth 10 raw points, awarded across multiple subparts. The College Board's scoring guidelines award points for specific criteria — not holistically. Every FRQ is anchored to at least two of the four Science Practices:

  • FRQ 1 — Practices 1 (Selecting Methods) & 2 (Data Analysis)
  • FRQ 2 — Practices 3 (Probability & Simulation) & 4 (Statistical Argumentation)
  • FRQ 3 (Inference focus) — Practices 2, 3, 4; a full inference procedure
  • FRQ 4 (Multi-focus) — Practices 2, 3, 4; combines multiple content areas

The four-step inference template (State-Plan-Do-Conclude) maps directly onto rubric criteria. Skipping a step almost always skips a point — see the FRQ tips guide.

Raw-to-composite (approximate)

The College Board does not publish official raw-score cutoffs, and the 2027 exam is the first fully-digital, 5-unit administration — so historical mappings should be treated as directional. Based on prior years and the new 82-point maximum (42 MCQ + 40 FRQ):

AP scoreApprox. composite (out of 82)
565+
452–64
338–51
226–37
10–25

Directional only. Cutoffs are re-set every year by the Chief Reader based on equating.

Where the points actually live

  • Conclusions in context (Practice 4) — worth a point on almost every inference subpart. Never write "reject H₀" without a context sentence.
  • Condition checks — one point each for Random, Independence, and Normal/Large Counts, in context.
  • Correct procedure name — "2-sample t-test for a difference in means" is worth explicit naming.
  • Parameter definition — always define μ or p in the context of the problem, not in the abstract.

Calculator and Bluebook considerations

  • The exam is administered digitally in Bluebook with a built-in Desmos calculator.
  • You may also use an approved handheld graphing, scientific, or four-function calculator.
  • Formula sheets and probability tables (z, t, chi-square) are provided in-app.
  • You must cite the procedure name — "using calculator, 2-Prop Z-Test yields z = …, p = …" — not just the numbers.

FAQ

How is AP Statistics scored in 2027?
Two equally-weighted sections: 42 multiple-choice questions (50%) and 4 free-response questions worth 10 points each (50%). Each FRQ contributes 12.5% of the total score. Raw composite scores are converted by the College Board into a 1–5 scale.
Is the Investigative Task still on the exam?
No. The Investigative Task was retired in the 2026–27 redesign. FRQ Section II now has 4 questions, each worth 10 points and equally weighted.
Is there a guessing penalty on AP Statistics?
No. Wrong answers on MCQs cost the same as blanks — always answer every question.
What is a passing score on AP Statistics?
A 3 or higher is considered passing and is accepted for credit at most colleges. Selective schools typically require a 4 or 5.
