AB and BC overlap

AP Calculus AB and BC overlap: BC includes all of AB, so this guide shares the AB material and adds Units 9 and 10 and the extra BC topics.

Common FRQ types

TypeWhat it asksCourse
Rates and accumulationInterpret a rate in context and accumulate it with an integralAB and BC
Table dataEstimate derivatives and Riemann sums from a tableAB and BC
Graph of f′Find extrema, concavity and values from a derivative graphAB and BC
Differential equationsSlope fields, separation of variables, tangent-line estimatesAB and BC (BC adds Euler's method and logistic growth)
Area and volumeSet up and evaluate integrals for regions and solidsAB and BC
Parametric, polar or vectorSpeed, distance travelled, and area in polar formBC only
SeriesTaylor polynomials, convergence tests, error boundsBC only

Every type rewards the setup. Write the integral or derivative you are evaluating before the number, and give units in context.

How many to do

  • FRQs: at least two graded attempts at each type, including the two BC-only types.
  • Multiple choice: steady sets across all ten units.
  • Full practice exam: one timed run in the last few weeks.

How to practise an FRQ

  1. Time yourself. About 15 minutes per FRQ, matching the exam.
  2. Grade with the official scoring guideline. Check each point on its own.
  3. Find the missed point. Name exactly which step or statement cost it.
  4. Redo only that part. Repair the missed point, not the whole question.

FAQ

Where can I find real AP Calculus BC practice questions?
College Board AP Central posts released free-response questions with scoring guidelines for free. AP Classroom, through your teacher, adds topic questions and progress checks.
Can I use AB questions to practise for BC?
Yes. BC includes all of AB, so AB free-response questions are good BC practice. Add BC-only questions for series, parametric, polar and vector functions.
How many FRQs should I practise?
Aim for at least two graded attempts at each common FRQ type, then one full timed practice exam.
