AP Calculus BC Scoring: How the Exam Is Graded

Your AP Calculus BC score combines multiple choice and free response equally. Free-response points are earned one at a time, so knowing what each point asks for is the fastest way to raise your score.

AB and BC overlap

AP Calculus AB and BC overlap: BC includes all of AB, so this guide shares the AB material and adds Units 9 and 10 and the extra BC topics.

Section weights

SectionQuestionsTimeWeight
Multiple choice, Part A (no calculator)3060 minutes50% combined
Multiple choice, Part B (calculator)1545 minutes
Free response, Part A (calculator)230 minutes50% combined
Free response, Part B (no calculator)460 minutes

Both exams use the same format. BC score reports also include an AB subscore, from the questions on shared AB material.

How FRQ points are earned

Each FRQ is worth 9 points. Readers check each point on its own: a correct setup, a supported answer, or a justification that names the theorem or test you used.

Where you lose points

  • No setup. A number without the integral or derivative behind it can miss the point.
  • No units or context. Answers about a situation need units and a sentence about what they mean.
  • Weak justification. Say why: name the sign change of f′, or the theorem and its conditions.
  • Calculator shorthand. Write the expression you entered, not calculator syntax.

FAQ

How is the AP Calculus BC exam scored?
Multiple choice and free response are each 50% of your score. The two are combined into a composite score, which is converted to a final AP score from 1 to 5.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers?
No. Wrong multiple-choice answers do not cost points, so answer every question.
How are the free-response questions graded?
Each FRQ is worth 9 points, scored against a published guideline. Each point is earned separately, so correct setup and supporting work earn points even if a later step is wrong.
What is the AB subscore?
BC score reports include an AB subscore, from the questions on shared AB material. Some colleges grant AB credit from it.
